     Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra third chromosome 21 (normally two) or part of it. It is often associated with delayed physical growth, mild to moderate intellectual disability, and characteristic facial features. The average IQ of young people with Down syndrome is 50, equivalent to the mental abilities of an 8-9 year old, but the specific circumstances vary widely.
